They Work for Us!
There’s something strange about how we treat politicians in this country.
We elect them to represent us. To work on our behalf. To make decisions that affect our lives, our families, and our communities. And yet… we stand in line to take photos with them. We ask them for autographs. We treat them like celebrities.
I know this because I used to be that guy. I’m sure you are guilty of this, too.
I remember waiting in line for a photo op with an elected official when I was a young adult. I remember thinking it was a cool moment. Something worth documenting. Maybe even something to show others.
At the time, it felt normal. But one day, it hit me. They work for me. Who benefits from this exchange?
That realization changed how I see the entire political dynamic.
Somewhere along the way, we flipped the relationship upside down. Public servants became public figures. Representation turned into reverence. Accountability gave way to admiration. And when that happens, something important gets lost.
Because when you view a politician as a celebrity, you’re less likely to question them. Less likely to challenge them. Less likely to hold them accountable when it matters most. But when you remember they work for you, everything changes.
You start asking better questions. You expect clearer answers. You demand results instead of moments.
That doesn’t mean you can’t appreciate someone’s service. It doesn’t mean you can’t be cordial, respectful, or even friendly. But it does mean keeping the relationship in its proper order.
They are not above you. They are accountable to you. And maybe it’s time we all started acting like it.
